The Patient Access ED Registration Specialist is the first point of contact and creates a welcoming environment, anticipating and acting on the needs of internal and external customers in the emergency department care setting. This role is responsible for accurately identifying patients and completing demographic, financial, regulatory, and medical information.
Utilizes tools and resources to obtain and enter required information for registration into the electronic health system. Follows procedures for positive identification and medical record number assignment, reviews demographic and insurance information for completeness, and corrects deficiencies to avoid delays in collection efforts.
Ensures EMTALA compliant registration steps for emergency department patients. Identifies patients presenting with critical symptoms and activates clinical protocols. Obtains all appropriate regulatory signatures. Documents insurance verification, identifies patient liabilities like deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and policy limitations; verifies patient liabilities with payers; calculates patient payments; requests payment at registration; and documents in the EHR.
Consistently displays good customer service behaviors to all patients and visitors, promoting positive patient experiences. Assists patients to destinations as needed and manages patient visitor flow according to hospital policy and safety guidelines. Performs other assigned duties.
Associate degree in healthcare administration, medical office administration, or related field required; 4 years related experience in lieu of degree considered. Minimum 1 year experience in a healthcare setting, especially in patient registration, insurance verification, or related administrative roles. Certification in healthcare administration such as Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) preferred.
