ICU Veterinary Technician

PetVet Care Centers' Pacific & Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists is currently seeking an ICU Veterinary Technician.

The mission of PetVet Care Centers is to improve the lives of animals and people by providing exceptional and compassionate care at every stage.

You will assist practitioners in providing high-quality care to ICU patients by performing technical and administrative tasks, monitoring patient status, and assisting in emergency procedures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Rounding with previous ICU tech to understand patient care
  • Monitoring patient charts, administering medications, obtaining diagnostic samples
  • Assessing patient well-being and vitals, alerting doctors as necessary
  • Placement and care of intravenous catheters and other tubes
  • Performing diagnostic tests including bloodwork, radiographs, oxygen saturation
  • Calculating dosages and fluid therapy rates
  • Assisting in treatments such as catheter placement, oxygen therapy, telemetry monitoring
  • Participating in CPR and emergency response
  • Ensuring emergency equipment is prepared
  • Preparing patients for discharge and completing documentation
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of ICU

Advancement is encouraged with opportunities for specialized continuing education in areas like oncology or anesthesiology.

Qualifications:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or equivalent
  • Minimum 3-5 years critical care, intensive care, and emergency experience
  • Strong client service, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with multiple phone lines and applications

Preferred:

  • Previous veterinary referral and reception experience

Work schedules vary including morning, evening, and weekend shifts.

Physical effort involves lifting animals (up to 100 lbs), standing or walking for extended periods, and exposure to unpleasant odors and noises. Possible exposure to bites, scratches, animal waste, and contagious diseases.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • RVT or equivalent certification
  • 3-5 years experience in critical care, ICU, emergency veterinary settings
  • Proficiency in venipuncture, catheter placements, cystocentesis
  • Skills in CPR, anesthesiology, radiology, lab testing (CBC, Chem, UA, viral tests, coagulation, etc.)
  • Ability to operate critical monitoring equipment (doppler, ECG, SpO2, anesthesia machines)
  • Strong math skills for dosage and fluid calculations
  • Excellent communication and client service abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple applications simultaneously
  • Physical ability to handle animals and ICU workload
