The Patient Financial Services Representative supports quality healthcare by managing duties that support the financial well-being of WhidbeyHealth. Responsibilities include coordinating patient referrals and follow-ups, verifying insurance, providing financial counseling for self-pay accounts, and billing and collecting insurance and self-pay accounts.
This role requires professional behavior with respect and consideration towards patients, families, staff, and affiliates, following all federal, state, and payer-specific regulations and billing policies.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate patient referrals by scheduling with specialists, facilities, agencies, and insurance companies.
- Ensure timely follow-up and clear documentation of referral information.
- Request and disseminate medical records necessary for referrals.
- Update staff on changes in referral procedures, laws, and insurance requirements.
- Work collaboratively with care team members for a seamless patient referral experience.
- Complete forms per departmental and governmental guidelines and maintain comprehensive filing.
- Provide backup support as needed to the Patient Registrar or HIM Technician.
- Verify insurance eligibility and benefits; communicate regarding referrals and authorizations.
- Maintain insurance payer requirements and provide departmental training.
- Interview patients for demographic and insurance information.
- Provide financial counseling, arrange patient financial resolutions, and advise on alternative resources.
- Handle billing and collections, including electronic/manual billing, payment processing, refunds, and follow-ups.
- Work closely with third-party payers, collection agencies, and attorneys.
- Assist patients with financial assistance policy and price quotes.
- Maintain accurate documentation and reports for financial activities and billing.
- Provide prompt and courteous service to visitors and callers in the Patient Financial Services department.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; advanced education preferred.
- Minimum one year experience in medical front office; billing and collections experience preferred.
- Certified Revenue Cycle Specialist (CRCS) preferred; Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) acceptable for certain roles.
Wage Range: $22.477 - $39.710 hourly (approximately $46,739 - $82,609 annually)
Location: WhidbeyHealth, Cardiac Care Life Center, Coupeville, WA
Schedule: Full-time, Day shift, 8 hours, 5 days/week
- High school diploma or equivalent required; advanced education preferred.
- Minimum one year previous related experience in a medical front office.
- Previous experience with billing and collections in a medical office or hospital setting strongly preferred.
- Certified Revenue Cycle Specialist (CRCS) certification preferred.
- Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) certification acceptable for roles in Patient Referrals, Insurance Verifier, or Financial Advocate.
- Eligible for benefits if working 0.6 FTE or higher.
