Responsible for researching codes and abstracting medical information to ensure accurate, complete, and billable codes for outpatient and physician clinical services. The role identifies coding opportunities, recommends improvements, monitors trends, and escalates discrepancies to management.
This position is based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The selected candidate must live in Clark County, NV or be willing to relocate before hire.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years of outpatient coding experience in one or more of the following settings:
- Physician's office
- Ambulatory surgery center
- Emergency department
- Multidisciplinary medical practice or group
- Related formal education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis
Certifications
One or a combination of the following:
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
- Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
- Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS-P)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
Knowledge and Skills
- Outpatient code sets including CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and Medicare hospital and physician outpatient coding and reimbursement regulations
- Healthcare technology and EHR practices
- Coding guidelines, departmental policies, and procedures
- Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, and minor surgical procedures
- Revenue cycle workflows, including charges/charge master, code edits, auditing, denials management, and document improvement
- Use of 3M 360 or similar encoder/coding systems
- Strong accuracy, productivity, and attention to detail
- Ability to review, abstract, and validate medical information
- Effective communication and confidentiality skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in an office setting and use standard equipment
- Ability to sit and concentrate for extended periods
- Ability to read printed materials and VDT screens
- Ability to communicate in person and by telephone
- Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 20 pounds
