Coder II

MUSC Health

The Coder II at the Medical University of South Carolina is responsible for the accurate assignment of diagnostic, procedural, and condition codes for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service encounters based on documentation in the patient medical record. This role supports compliance with regulatory requirements and appropriate reimbursement.

Work is performed primarily in a remote office setting.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree in Health Information Management, Health Information Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • National coding credential required through AAPC or AHIMA, such as CPC, CCS, CCA, CPC-A, or RHIT.
  • 1 to 2 years of coding experience in a healthcare setting preferred; 2 to 3 years of experience noted when paired with an associate's degree.
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT-4 coding principles, guidelines, and conventions.
  • Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and encoding software.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
