Certified Medical Coder

Howard University Hospital

Responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and coding procedural information that determines Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance payments. Ensures compliance with established coding guidelines, third-party reimbursement policies, regulations, and accreditation standards.

  • Reviews medical records for documentation completeness and validity
  • Assigns ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes accurately
  • Codes charges for assigned departments including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, OB/GYN, and Pulmonary
  • Communicates with providers to clarify incomplete, ambiguous, or conflicting documentation
  • Collaborates with management regarding documentation issues and recurring errors
  • Uses software applications and information systems to support coding activities
Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Recognized certification as CPMA, CPC, or CCS-P
  • Formal coding program plus coding certification may be considered in lieu of prior professional coding experience
  • Background in a medical environment
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology
  • Understanding of federal and state rules and regulations related to physician billing preferred

Core Competencies

  • Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Working knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer reimbursement policies
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and applicable billing regulations
  • Strong accuracy, attention to detail, analytical skills, and critical thinking
