The Certified Coder is responsible for ensuring charges are assessed and entered in compliance with applicable coding regulations, standards, policies, and guidelines established by CMS and third-party payers.
This role requires a strong understanding of CCI edits, payer rules related to medical necessity, and bundling of services. The coder also assists providers with documentation standards and gives feedback on the quality of clinical documentation.
Coders may work remotely from home, provided they maintain appropriate internet connectivity, physical workspace, and HIPAA compliance.
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- Formal coder training strongly preferred
Certification
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or similar certification preferred, such as CCA, CPC, or CCS
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of medical coding experience required
- Experience with electronic medical records and billing systems required
- Procedure coding experience preferred
- Advanced education may substitute for some experience
Skills and knowledge
- Proficiency with computers, calculators, and basic Excel spreadsheets
- Knowledge of medical billing and patient accounting services
- Knowledge of medical coding and clinic operating policies and procedures
- Strong understanding of CMS regulations, payer rules, coverage, medical necessity, and bundling requirements
- Ability to review clinical documentation for accuracy and completeness
- Ability to prepare records according to detailed instructions
- Strong communication, teamwork, attendance, dependability, and promptness
- Thorough understanding of ICD-10 and CPT coding
