Under direct supervision, the Inpatient Coder is responsible for the accurate coding and abstracting of inpatient cases and related services from medical record documentation. This role assigns codes and modifiers using ICD-CM, ICD-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and other specialty systems as required.
The position also codes and abstracts Observation (OBS), Hospital Ambulatory Surgery (HAS), Emergency Department (ED), and complex Hospital Outpatient Visit (CHOY) services when needed. Work must follow applicable coding rules, regulations, and official guidelines, including ICD-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, AHA Coding Clinic, CMS, OSHPD, and Kaiser Permanente coding policies.
The role is based in Oakland, California, with a remote work setting. Candidates must reside in Northern California and align with Kaiser Permanente's authorized states policy.
Experience
- Three years of continuous hospital coding experience within the last five years.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Completion of coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, current ICD-CM, ICD-PCS, and CPT coding conventions, and disease process from an accredited program.
Certification
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
Additional Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of computer keyboard and mouse use.
- Minimum score of 75% on the KP Inpatient Coding test.
- Ability to meet productivity and quality standards.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret health records and translate documentation into coding.
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and disease process.
- Knowledge of coding quality, compliance, reimbursement methodologies, and current coding classifications.
- Ability to communicate with physicians regarding diagnosis and procedure clarification.
- Must maintain coding credentials and complete required continuing education units.
- Must abide by AHIMA and AAPC code of ethics.
