Assign ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes by reviewing inpatient or outpatient clinical documentation and diagnostic results for billing, reporting, research, and regulatory compliance.
This role supports coding operations for both inpatient and outpatient accounts, with a focus on accurate code assignment, charge validation/reconciliation, coding edits, reimbursement support, and compliance with Medicare, AMA, and internal coding guidelines.
The position also helps educate physicians and clinical staff, resolves routine coding issues, and works closely with Patient Financial Services and other departments to support accurate billing and reimbursement.
- High school diploma or GED required; associate degree in a health-related field preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical record requirements, and HIPAA privacy rules
- Ability to assign and sequence ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient coding, or ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for outpatient coding
- 2 years of inpatient or outpatient coding experience preferred
- Working knowledge of charging and billing processes preferred for outpatient coding
- Working knowledge of Medicare, NCCI, OCE, LCD, NCD, and other claim edit guidelines and protocols preferred
- Certification required: CCA with CCS within 6 months, or CCS, CIC, RHIT, RHIA, CPC-H, CPC, or COC depending on coding setting
- Strong understanding of pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, radiology, and other clinical specialties preferred
