Under the direct supervision of the Hospital Coding Supervisor, the Coder II abstracts inpatient, outpatient, clinic, and emergency department medical record documentation to select and sequence appropriate ICD-10-CM/PCS, HCPCS, and CPT4 codes.
The role is responsible for accurate code assignment for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures, and conditions in accordance with official coding guidelines and MUSC policies and procedures. Final DRG assignment is also part of the coding workflow.
• Associate’s degree in health information technology or a related field, or 5 years of coding experience • Coding certification required, such as CPC or CCS • With an associate’s degree, 2–3 years of coding experience and familiarity with coding software • Strong analytical skills and ability to resolve coding issues • Effective communication and interpersonal skills • RHIT, CCS, CCA, CPC, CPC-A, or another coding credential required
