Responsibilities
The Coder I reviews medical record documentation for inpatient and outpatient visits to determine diagnoses and procedures documented by physicians. Using ICD-9 and CPT coding standards, the role translates clinical documentation into coded data according to AHA, hospital-specific, and regulatory guidelines.
The coder enters coded and abstracted data into the hospital electronic information system to support Health Information Services indexing, internal use, and mandated reporting requirements. The position also participates in chart review projects as assigned.
- Minimum one year of experience with ICD-9 and CPT coding in an acute care setting
- Basic computer experience
- Experience using encoder software for code assignment in an acute care setting preferred
- Computer data entry experience with 10-key and typing speed of 35 wpm preferred
- Completion of college-level coursework in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and ICD/CPT coding required
- Current enrollment in, or completion of, a program for CCS, RHIT, or RHIA certification required
- CCS, RHIT, or RHIA certification or license preferred
