Medical Records Technician (Coder)

  • Review medical records for completeness, including required identifiers, signatures, dates, and supporting reports.
  • Evaluate documentation for accuracy, consistency, medical necessity, and proper modifier usage.
  • Review provider documentation to ensure appropriate Evaluation and Management (E/M) levels and correct CPT code assignment.
  • Assign and sequence ICD, CPT, HCPCS, CDT, and DSM codes based on documented diagnoses and procedures.
  • Ensure diagnostic and procedural terminology aligns with current medical nomenclature and official coding guidelines.

This is a federal position with benefits available through the U.S. government.

Requirements & Qualifications

Conditions of employment

  • Selectee may be subject to a probationary period.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must successfully pass E-Verify.
  • Must complete a federal background investigation.
  • Must complete required background forms within five calendar days of issuance.
  • Must meet financial suitability requirements.
  • Must present two valid forms of identification prior to appointment.
  • REAL ID-compliant identification may be required.

Qualifications

  • GS-07 level: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06.
  • Experience should include verifying documentation supporting diagnoses, treatments, procedures, and services rendered.
  • Experience should include documenting clarification requests for diagnosis specificity and procedure details.
  • Experience should include assisting providers and clinical staff with documentation and coding guidance.
  • Experience should include participating in coding reviews, compliance audits, and performance improvement activities.
  • Experience should include analyzing coding trends, denial patterns, and documentation issues.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) preferred.
  • No education requirements.
