The coder/abstracter is responsible for accurate code assignment for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures, and conditions as documented in the patient medical record. Coding is performed using ICD-10 and CPT classification systems in accordance with official coding guidelines from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American Health Information Management Association. Work must follow Health Information Management Department and MUSC policies and procedures.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in health information technology or a related field, or 5 years of coding experience
  • Coding certification required, such as CPC or CCS
  • With an associate's degree, 2-3 years of coding experience and familiarity with coding software
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to resolve coding issues
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • RHIT, CCS, CCA, CPC, CPC-A, or another coding credential required
