At Houston Methodist Corporate, the Inpatient Coder is responsible for ensuring diagnostic and procedure codes are assigned accurately to inpatient encounters based on documentation in the electronic medical record while maintaining compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.
The role supports accurate inpatient coding, abstracting, and documentation review to help maintain coding quality, timely account processing, and compliance with AHIMA standards and hospital policy.

Requirements & Qualifications
Education
- Associate’s degree or higher in a CAHIIM-accredited program, or an additional two years of relevant experience in lieu of degree.
Experience
- One year of relevant inpatient coding experience, or successful completion of the Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program or Outpatient to Inpatient Coder Transition Program.
Licenses and Certifications
- One of the following is required:
- RHIT - Certified Health Information Technician (AHIMA)
- RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator (AHIMA)
- CCS - Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA)
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of coding classification systems, DRG and APC systems, official coding guidelines, and coding compliance.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Knowledge of electronic medical records and imaging systems preferred.
- Proficiency with electronic encoder applications preferred.
- Strong PC skills and ability to work in office software, coding software, and abstracting systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers.
- Ability to maintain productivity, accuracy, and coding timeliness.
- Ability to use English language effectively in speaking, reading, and writing.
