Medical Coder

Northfield Hospital + Clinics

The Medical Coder reviews medical documentation and assigns accurate diagnostic and procedural codes using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems. The role supports correct billing, compliance with healthcare regulations, revenue cycle operations, and reduction of claim denials. The coder works closely with healthcare providers and billing staff to maintain accurate, complete, and current patient records.

Key Accountabilities

  • Review and analyze medical records to identify diagnoses and procedures for accurate coding and reporting.
  • Assign accurate medical codes using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Ensure coding meets regulatory and payer requirements.
  • Work with providers to clarify ambiguous or incomplete documentation.
  • Monitor coding worklists such as claims, denials, account checks, and tasks, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Process and transmit coded medical records in a timely manner to support billing and reimbursement.
  • Participate in internal and external audits to support coding quality.
  • Stay current on coding standards, payer policies, and documentation best practices.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Completion of a certified medical coding program.
  • AHIMA or AAPC certification.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently.
  • 6 months of medical coding experience in a clinic or hospital setting preferred.
