The Inpatient Coder Level 2 performs independent coding of inpatient medical records, ensuring accuracy when assigning ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient hospital encounters in compliance with official coding guidelines, regulatory agencies, and hospital policies. This role requires prior coding experience and strong knowledge of DRG assignment, clinical documentation, and coding compliance.
Primary department: Coding Support Services, UHS Revenue Cycle Operations.
Primary work shift: Day.
Compensation is offered at an hourly rate of $27.80 - $41.69 depending on experience.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma
- Two (2) years of inpatient coding experience
- CPC, RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CIC certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree in HIT or a related field
- CIC certification
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate proficient understanding of complex clinical scenarios, including comorbidities and complications
- Analyze detailed clinical documentation to identify relevant clinical indicators for accurate coding
- Perform and respond to documentation queries in a timely manner
- Apply strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems
- Participate in basic auditing and quality assurance activities
- Utilize problem-solving and critical thinking skills to resolve coding issues
- Communicate professionally with physicians and healthcare teams
- Work independently while meeting deadlines and productivity goals
- Identify cases requiring provider documentation clarification and collaborate with the CDI team
- Meet and maintain established coding productivity and accuracy standards
- Assist in mentoring Level 1 coders or new team members as needed
