Certified Coder - Hospital

Horizon Health is a critical access rural health facility with 25 inpatient beds located in Paris, Illinois, along with multiple outpatient clinic settings in Paris and surrounding cities. The organization has served residents of Edgar County since 1968 through community education, emergency services, and outpatient care.

This position codes and/or bills patient medical records using pertinent information according to departmental and HMFP policy and procedures. The role uses healthcare coding systems to accurately assign codes to patient accounts and may also require entering billing entries.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Data entry in facility software using the electronic health record and scanned or written reports.
  • Assigning accurate Evaluation and Management codes according to AMA CPT guidelines.
  • Using query worksheets or similar tools to communicate with physicians and obtain appropriate diagnoses to support coding accuracy.
  • Reviewing coding changes and regulatory requirements, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance rules related to coding and billing.
  • Maintaining consistent turnaround time to meet coding targets.
  • Following confidentiality requirements and HIPAA rules.
  • Reviewing uncoded patient encounters and obtaining needed information to help release the final bill from the Business Office to the payor.
  • Cross-training to provide coverage for other clinic functions as needed.
Requirements & Qualifications

Position requirements

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS-P) required for this wage grade.
  • Uncertified coders are placed in a different category.
  • Maintain continuing education and provide certification documentation for annual evaluation.
  • Previous coding experience is required.
  • Previous knowledge of CMS coding is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • Working knowledge of disease processes, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology is required.
