The Coding and Clinical Documentation Integrity Department at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is seeking an experienced medical coder to provide centralized coding support for all CHOP facilities. This role is responsible for assigning ICD-10-CM/PCS and/or CPT codes to discharged patient charts while ensuring accurate, appropriate, and high-quality coded data across the organization.
The position is fully remote and available to candidates in eligible U.S. states. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8-hour day shift, with flexibility to start as early as 5:00 AM EST after the introductory period.
Key responsibilities include:
- Review and analyze medical records to determine principal, secondary, and procedure diagnoses for inpatient and outpatient charts
- Assign ICD-10-CM/PCS and/or CPT codes accurately and within productivity expectations
- Create appropriate physician queries and participate in the physician query program
- Identify trends and opportunities for improvement in clinical documentation
- Apply official AHA Coding Clinic guidance and internal coding guidelines
- Research new diagnostic and procedure codes as needed
- Maintain compliance with national Correct Coding Initiatives
- Abstract clinical, coded, demographic, and required information into the Epic electronic medical record system
- Work collaboratively with other coders on challenging cases and coding scenarios
- Associate's degree required; bachelor's degree preferred
- At least 2 years of acute care inpatient and outpatient coding experience required
- Active RHIA, RHIT, or CCS certification required upon hire
- Experience with Epic, HDM/3M Encoder, and Microsoft applications
- Ability to maintain productivity and quality standards
Productivity and quality expectations:
- Inpatient coding: 2.5 charts per hour
- Outpatient/same-day surgeries: 6 charts per hour
- Minimum accuracy rate: 95%
- Charts coded within 3 days of availability: 98% of the time
Location restrictions:
- Cannot support workers located in Washington, Wyoming, North Dakota, California (for hourly positions), U.S. Territories, or outside the United States
