Accurately codes, sequences, and abstracts inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department records according to ICD-9-CM and CPT coding guidelines.
Analyzes code assignment for correct DRG calculation to support optimal and timely reimbursement.
Abstracts medical record information into hospital databases and registries for statistical quality data and fiscal reporting.
Queries physicians for clarification of documentation when needed.
Performs duties within approved practices and exercises independent judgment within pre-determined guidelines.
Requirements & Qualifications
Required skills
- Knowledge of Health Information Systems practices, procedures, and guidelines
- Ability to analyze and solve problems
- Ability to seek out new methods and principles to improve services
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Required experience
- One year of hospital outpatient coding experience required
- Inpatient coding experience preferred
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required
- High school diploma or equivalent
