Coder II - Inpatient

Position Overview

Responsible for the timely and accurate assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes for inpatient charts for a variety of facilities within Avera Health. The coder also handles accurate abstracting, reporting, and editing functions. This role works with guidance from more experienced coding staff and supports quality and production goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review clinical documentation to identify the correct sequence of ICD-10-CM diagnosis and PCS procedure codes for assigned inpatient charts.
  • Work across designated service lines, which may include surgery, NICU/PICU, cardiovascular, women’s health, OB, nursery, behavioral health, orthopedics, and inpatient rehabilitation.
  • Determine the appropriate DRG based on insurance and/or medical coding for inpatient charts.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on coding-related topics when needed.
  • Query physicians and clinical documentation staff to ensure complete capture of the clinical record for accurate DRG classification and coding.
Requirements & Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) through AHIMA within 180 days, or
  • Certified Document Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) through AHIMA within 180 days, or
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) through AHIMA within 180 days, or
  • Certified Coding Associate (CCA) through AHIMA within 180 days, or
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) through AHIMA within 180 days

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Health Information Administration or Health Information Technology
  • 1-3 years of coding experience
