Performs inpatient coding services with responsibility for coding accuracy, DRG assignment and validation, and timely completion of medical record coding. Uses the 3M Encoder to classify records accurately according to ICD-10-CM/PCS. Collaborates with the Coding Manager/Supervisor, CDI team, Business Office, and Case Management staff. Maintains knowledge of outpatient coding and other coding areas as needed and is expected to maintain strong performance standards.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Three to five years of coding experience required, inpatient experience preferred
- Advanced training in medical coding, including ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and APC
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Strong computer skills
- Ability to read medical reports, interpret lab values relevant to coding diagnoses, and abstract pertinent information from records
- Ability to communicate information by telephone or letter in response to inquiries
- Ability to work remotely and maintain a private, secure work area with high-speed internet at the employee's expense
- High school diploma, GED, or higher education required
- AHIMA certification: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, or CCA; or AAPC coding certification required
- Degree in Medical Records or a healthcare-related field, or a coding education certificate from an accredited vocational school/college preferred
