Inpatient Coder

Beloit Memorial Hospital is seeking an Inpatient Coder to join the Health Information Management team.

The inpatient coder is responsible for assigning accurate diagnostic and procedural codes for billing, statistical reporting, and abstracting patient medical record information. This role also supports proper DRG assignment, coding accuracy, and compliance with federal, state, and payer regulations.

  • Shift: 1st
  • Schedule: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Hours per week: 40
  • Department: Health Information Management
  • Reporting relationship: HIM Coding Manager
  • Benefits status: Eligible

Key responsibilities include coding inpatient, observation, and ambulatory surgery records; abstracting information from medical records; resolving coding issues with limited supervision; correcting billing denials; and collaborating with medical staff on documentation and charge issues.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Outpatient Coding (COC), or equivalent coding credential preferred
  • If not certified, certification must be obtained within one year of hire
  • 2-3 years of inpatient coding experience in a hospital setting preferred
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes
  • Experience reviewing complex medical records and assigning accurate DRGs
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer rules and reimbursement guidelines
  • Familiarity with EHR systems and encoder software
  • Strong computer and data entry skills
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain quality in a high-volume environment
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must maintain certification in good standing
  • Must follow Beloit Health System policies and HIPAA guidelines
