This position is responsible for coding inpatient and outpatient medical records to support reimbursement and data collection for the OSU Health System. ICD-10-CM diagnosis and procedure codes are assigned for inpatient records, and ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes plus CPT-4 procedure codes are applied to outpatient records. Medical record data is then abstracted into a clinical abstracting system.
The role involves coding some or all of the following record types: inpatient, outpatient clinic, and ancillary areas. It is primarily responsible for the coding and billing of medical records and other documents related to patient visits. Duties include selecting appropriate diagnoses, identifying principal and secondary diagnoses, deciphering handwriting from professional staff, sequencing diagnoses and procedures, and entering coded data into a computer system.
The staff member is responsible for accurate coding that supports hospital reimbursement, research, and planning in accordance with departmental productivity standards.
Minimum completion of a CAHIIM-approved coding certificate program, HIMT program, or equivalent education and experience.
Demonstrated coding proficiency through satisfactory completion of OSUWMC's coding test.
Familiarity with, or experience using, computer-assisted coding and/or an automated encoder.
Required credentials for hospital coding: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, COC, or Radiation Oncology Certified Coder (if applicable).
Required credentials for professional coding: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, COC, CPC, or Radiation Oncology Certified Coder (if applicable).
Preferred: Minimum of two years of academic medicine coding experience, inpatient or outpatient.
