Surgical Coder II

Position overview

This is a hybrid surgical coding role that must be located within 100 miles of a Mayo Clinic campus for on-site expectations based on business needs.

The Surgical Coder reviews, analyzes, and codes professional/physician medical record documentation, including medical diagnostic and procedural information for various practices. The coder works collaboratively with surgeons to ensure accuracy of the code sets on surgical cases.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma and 6 years of physician/professional/procedural/surgical coding experience, or
  • Associate's degree and 4 years of physician/professional/procedural/surgical coding experience
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Minimum of 4 years of physician/professional/procedural/surgical coding experience
  • RHIA, RHIT, CCS-P, or CPC credential required
  • HFMA certification preferred
  • Orthopedic surgery coding experience preferred

Knowledge and skills

  • Knowledge of professional/physician coding rules for specialized surgical professionals
  • Experience with NCCI, NCD, LCD, and outpatient coding guidelines
  • In-depth knowledge of medical terminology, surgical procedures, disease processes, patient health record content, and the medical record coding process
  • Knowledge of compliant healthcare billing and collections principles
  • Knowledge of coding and billing requirements for teaching settings and provider-based billing facilities
  • Ability to work independently in a teleworking environment
  • Strong organization, prioritization, communication, attention to detail, follow-through, and a positive attitude
