The Medical Coder and Accounts Receivable (AR) Specialist is responsible for accurately assigning medical codes to diagnoses, procedures, and services provided by healthcare providers. This role also handles accounts receivable functions, including billing follow-up, payment posting, and claim resolution, with a focus on compliance and revenue optimization.
- Assign ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes based on physician documentation.
- Ensure coding practices follow regulations, payer guidelines, and healthcare standards.
- Review clinical documentation to support accurate coding of complex cases.
- Identify and correct coding errors and discrepancies to reduce denials and rejections.
- Collaborate with providers to clarify unclear documentation.
- Monitor the AR process and follow up on unpaid claims.
- Resolve denied or rejected claims and work with insurers to secure payment.
- Post payments to patient accounts and reconcile discrepancies.
- Maintain detailed communication records for audit and reporting purposes.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Certification in Medical Coding (AAPC, CPC, CCS, or equivalent) required.
- 2+ years of experience in medical coding and/or accounts receivable within a healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Familiarity with healthcare billing processes and insurance claim submission requirements.
- Strong understanding of HIPAA and healthcare compliance regulations.
- Proficiency with healthcare billing software and EMR systems.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- ICD-10 experience preferred.
