Role Summary
The Hospital Outpatient Coder Level II uses clinical coding knowledge, based on the Official Coding Guidelines and AHA Coding Clinic, to assign ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT codes with a high level of accuracy for Ambulatory Surgery, Gastrointestinal, Infusion, and Observation encounters.
This role works closely with physicians, clinical documentation improvement specialists, quality teams, and patient finance staff. It plays a key role in billing, research, internal and external reporting, and regulatory compliance. The position also follows up on CCI edits, claim rejections, and other issues affecting billing and reimbursement, while ensuring accuracy of APCs and proper extraction of core data into the HIM abstracting system and data warehouse repository.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years of acute care outpatient coding experience, including outpatient diagnostic and ED coding
- CIRCC preferred
- Or one of the following certifications: CPC, CPC-H, CCA, RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P
