At Duke Health, this role is part of the Patient Revenue Management Organization, a centralized revenue cycle team supporting scheduling, registration, coding, billing, and other essential revenue functions across the health system.
This position is 100% remote for candidates who reside in an approved state.
The Medical Coder Specialist performs primary diagnosis and procedural coding for major surgical and procedural specialty areas. The role includes surgical chart abstraction, reconciliation of surgical cases, quality reporting support, and serving as a liaison to physicians and other providers to improve documentation and coding accuracy for compliance and revenue integrity.
The position also involves reviewing complex medical records, applying ICD-10-CM and CPT coding conventions, collaborating with clinical and revenue cycle teams, providing provider education, mentoring other coders, and supporting coding policy and procedure development.
Required experience
- Four years of coding experience
- At least two years of surgical abstraction experience in physician or medical group settings
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in medical record administration, or
- Associate degree in medical record technology, or
- One year coding diploma or equivalent coursework in medical terminology and anatomy & physiology with extensive coding training
Certifications
- RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC
Knowledge and skills
- Extensive knowledge of surgical procedure coding and applicable modifiers in a multi-specialty setting
- Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding conventions
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and disease processes
- Familiarity with DRG/APC reimbursement concepts
- Experience with coding software
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to perform data entry and work with electronic systems
Additional responsibilities
- Code from final signed operative reports
- Review complex medical records and supporting clinical documentation
- Educate physicians and providers on coding and documentation practices
- Mentor and assist other coders
- Support audits, quality reporting, and coding-related trend analysis
Compensation highlight
- $10,000 sign-on bonus paid in four equal installments over 24 months
