The coding specialist reviews the medical record using coding skills and clinical knowledge. Accurate ICD-10 diagnosis and CPT procedure codes are assigned based on documentation in the medical record, which directly impacts reimbursement. The role also includes querying clinicians when clarification is needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate ICD-CM diagnosis and CPT codes in a timely manner for appropriate encounters using CMS and American Hospital guidelines, CPT Assistant, and AHIMA code of ethics.
  • Work with physicians and providers to help improve documentation so the medical record accurately reflects severity of illness and level of care provided.
  • Participate in continuing education to enhance coding knowledge.
  • Meet established productivity guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows.
  • Participate in additional learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • May require use of personal protective equipment, including latex materials or an appropriate substitute.
  • Sedentary physical demand level with occasional lifting or carrying of 0-10 lbs.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Primary address must be located within the state of Michigan, or the candidate must be willing to move to Michigan.
  • Associate degree in Health Information Technology required.
  • Coding experience from an AHIMA-approved internship required, or successful completion of an independent study program offered by AHIMA.
  • RHIA or RHIT eligible; successful completion of the certification exam within 6 months of hire is required.
  • Fingerprinting required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy preferred.
  • Strong written, oral, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and maintain regular attendance.
  • Physical ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods; must have adequate vision, hearing, dexterity, and ability to perform job functions.
