Under direct supervision, this role performs inpatient and outpatient coding review, ensures coding compliance with federal regulations, and keeps coding guidelines and policy changes current. The position supports medical billing by abstracting patient information from medical records and assigning diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10 and CPT.
This is a hybrid role with both remote and on-campus work. The selected candidate must live within commuting distance of UT Health San Antonio, complete onsite orientation and training, and may occasionally be required to attend on-campus meetings and training. Ongoing remote work depends on productivity and quality standards.
Required skills and qualifications
- Proficiency in ICD-10 and CPT coding
- Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Customer service and collaboration skills
- High school diploma or GED required
- Professional coding accreditation or certification required, such as AHIMA, AAPC, RHIT, RHIA, or CCS
- Three years of experience in medical record abstraction and coding required
