Medical Records Coder II (Emergency Medicine)

At Duke Health, this role is part of the Patient Revenue Management Organization, a centralized revenue cycle team supporting scheduling, registration, coding, billing, and other revenue functions across the health system.

This position is 100% remote, but Duke University remote workers must reside in an approved state.

The role is focused on complex medical record coding for emergency medicine, ensuring accurate diagnosis and procedure coding, appropriate sequencing, and optimal reimbursement.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required
  • Active certification in one of the following:
    • RHIA
    • RHIT
    • CCS
    • CPC
    • HCS-D
  • Experience requirement depends on certification:
    • RHIA: no experience required
    • RHIT: no experience required
    • CCS: 1 year of coding experience required
    • CPC or HCS-D: 2 years of coding experience required
  • Advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding conventions
  • Strong understanding of anatomy and physiology
  • Strong medical terminology knowledge
  • Extensive DRG/APC reimbursement knowledge
  • Familiarity with coding software
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Data entry / CRT skills

Work Duties

  • Review complex medical records and accurately code primary and secondary diagnoses and procedures
  • Use ICD-10-CM and CPT coding conventions
  • Coordinate and review the work of designated employees
  • Perform quality audits and help maintain work quality and quantity
  • Assist with training and continuing education programs
  • Ensure accurate DRG/APC assignment
  • Abstract and compile data from medical records for reimbursement purposes
  • Educate physicians and communicate with nursing and ancillary staff regarding documentation needs
