Medical Coder - Ancillary

Optum

Optum is hiring a medical coder for ancillary facility outpatient coding. This full-time role supports health outcomes by accurately coding facility services and maintaining coding quality and productivity standards.

The position is scheduled for Monday through Friday during normal business hours, with occasional overtime as needed. Telecommuting is available from anywhere within the U.S., provided telecommuting requirements are met.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assign ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and modifier codes for facility outpatient ancillary services
  • Follow official coding guidelines and established client/facility coding guidelines
  • Apply ethical coding standards established by AAPC and/or AHIMA
  • Understand and use Medicare APC coding concepts
  • Query physicians and forms when appropriate
  • Maintain current coding knowledge and participate in department meetings and educational events
  • Meet required quality and productivity standards
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management
Requirements & Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Active professional coder certification through AHIMA and/or AAPC, such as CCA, CCS, RHIA, RHIT, CPC-H/COC, CIC, CCS-P, or CPC
  • 2+ years of experience with ICD-10, CPT, and modifiers
  • 2+ years of experience in acute outpatient coding
  • Intermediate-level experience using a Windows PC, Microsoft Excel, and EMR systems
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and communication skills

Telecommuting requirements

  • Dedicated work area separated from other living areas and providing information privacy
  • Ability to keep company-sensitive documents secure
  • Must live in a location with UnitedHealth Group-approved high-speed internet access
  • Must comply with UnitedHealth Group's Telecommuter Policy
