Responsible for coding all services, including major and minor surgical cases, performed in both office and hospital settings for MyMichigan Medical Group, Family Practice Center, and MyMichigan Urgent Care locations.
Monitors compliance with third-party payer guidelines while helping ensure maximum allowed reimbursement is attained. Uses broad knowledge of payer rules, procedure terminology, and coding regulations to ensure procedures are coded correctly for timely and accurate reimbursement.
Key duties include coding visits and services within 48 hours of receipt, applying Epic coding edits, CPT Assistant, and CMS guidelines to correct ICD, CPT, HCPCS, modifiers, and place of service for clean claims, coding major and minor surgical cases including obstetrics, and collaborating with physicians/providers to improve documentation.
Also reviews accounts related to patient or payer complaints or concerns, communicates findings to patients, payers, and physicians as needed, meets productivity guidelines, and participates in continuing education to enhance coding knowledge.
Required
- Primary address located within the state of Michigan, or willingness to move to Michigan
- High school diploma or GED
- CPC, CCS, CCSP, RHIT, or RHIA certification
- Ability to work independently and make coding decisions
- Knowledge of current CPT and ICD coding rules and regulations
- Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Windows
- Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy
- Understanding of medical record and patient confidentiality laws
- Strong organizational, oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred
- Associate degree
- Two years of physician coding and billing experience
- Four years of experience in the medical field
- One year of direct physician contact
- CPC-A accepted for up to 365 days from hire or transfer, pending successful completion of apprenticeship
