This position reviews physician documentation and assigns CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes, with a primary focus on advanced surgical and interventional procedures.
It is responsible for charge capture, TES edit maintenance and resolution, denial prevention, and supporting special projects to optimize departmental revenue. The role also supports revenue cycle activities such as registration and insurance follow-up, referrals, precertifications, and patient service revenue collection.
Assignments focus on the most complex and high-risk procedures and cases, requiring strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and multiple specialties. Additional responsibilities include mentoring Coder I and Coder II staff, auditing work, providing internal training and external physician education, assisting with onboarding and cross-training, and fostering relationships with providers.
The role is expected to work independently, maintain compliance and quality standards, represent coding guidelines at a high level, and serve as a go-to resource for projects and charge capture improvement across the team.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Coding certification from a nationally recognized organization such as AAPC or AHIMA is required, including one of the following: CCS-P, CPC, RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC-H, plus an additional specialty certification.
Required experience:
- 3 years of professional coding experience in CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM
- 2 years of experience in an outpatient specialty or surgical/ancillary diagnostic discipline
