Reviews, analyzes, and codes medical record documentation for complex diagnostic and procedural information across medical and surgical subspecialties using ICD-10, CPT, modifiers, and/or HCPCS codes with the highest specificity. Abstracts demographic and coding data accurately into the information system, reviews documentation for medical necessity, audits orders and claims before submission, and helps minimize claim denials. Provides technical guidance to physicians and other departmental staff and develops effective working relationships with physicians and stakeholders. Primary responsibility is complex procedural and surgery coding.
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- AAPC-accredited coding certificate program preferred
Experience
- 3 years of coding experience in Interventional Radiology, Cardiology, EP, and Cardiothoracic specialties required
- Experience coding across multiple specialties preferred
- Remote coding experience preferred
Certifications
- One or more of the following required upon hire:
- RHIA
- RHIT
- CCA
- CPC, CPC-A, or CPC-H
- CCS or CCS-P
- Cardiology specialty coding/certification preferred for Cardiothoracic, Interventional, EP, and Cardiovascular Surgery
- Transplant Surgery coding/certification preferred
- Neurosurgery coding/certification preferred
