Houston Methodist is hiring an Inpatient Coder to ensure diagnostic and procedure codes are assigned accurately to inpatient encounters based on electronic medical record documentation. The role supports coding compliance, data quality, and timely account processing while working within established regulatory and hospital guidelines.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assigning accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes using an electronic encoder
- Reviewing medical record documentation to determine principal diagnoses, secondary conditions, complications, and procedures
- Abstracting data into the encoder and EHR/EPIC systems
- Querying physicians to clarify diagnoses and procedures when needed
- Supporting departmental productivity, quality, and uncoded account goals
- Maintaining compliance with AHIMA ethical coding standards and official guidelines
Requirements & Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- An associate degree or higher in a CAHIIM-accredited program, or an additional two years of relevant experience in lieu of degree
- At least one year of relevant inpatient coding experience, or successful completion of the Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program or Outpatient to Inpatient Coder Transition Program
- One of the following credentials:
- RHIT
- RHIA
- CCS
- Strong knowledge of coding classification systems, DRG and APC systems, coding guidelines, and coding compliance
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Experience with electronic medical records and imaging systems preferred
- Proficiency with electronic encoder applications preferred
- Strong PC skills and the ability to work in office software, coding software, and abstracting systems
