Overview

Superior Ambulance Service began in 1959 with one ambulance and has grown into the largest independent, locally owned, and operated emergency medical services provider in the Midwest. The company employs more than 4,000 licensed EMTs, Paramedics, and Nurses and operates a fleet of more than 800 ambulances across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

The company is currently seeking a Medical Coder for its Billing Department. The right candidate will be trained. This position is fully in-office Monday through Friday in Elmhurst, IL or Taylor, MI.

Responsibilities

  • Review patient care reports thoroughly using all available documentation to determine medical necessity, level of service, origin/destination modifiers, and the patient’s condition at the time of transport.
  • Communicate professionally with internal and external departments to obtain missing documentation or clarify unclear information.
  • Refer patient care reports to the Processing Manager with any coding or documentation questions.
  • Communicate with other departments as needed for problem resolution and clarification.
  • Assign condition codes for trip reasons with a minimum of 95% accuracy.
  • Meet established coding productivity standards.
  • Monitor work and adjust daily duties to ensure records are coded timely and accurately.
  • Report productivity daily to the Processing Manager following established guidelines.
  • Use email, Excel, Word, and department files/documents to complete work assignments.
  • Attend department meetings and education sessions to expand knowledge of medical terminology and coding guidelines.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • College coursework toward Healthcare Billing Certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and handle stress in a busy environment.
  • Positive and professional attitude.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Typing speed of at least 35 WPM.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific information.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries and forward appropriate complaints from employees, customers, agencies, facilities, and hospitals.
  • Ability to present information effectively to management.
