Work location: Bradenton, FL
This role focuses on the accuracy and completeness of diagnosis and procedure codes submitted on claims to support quality documentation reporting and maximize reimbursement. The position also tracks and trends denied claims, errors, and other issues for communication to revenue cycle leadership and serves as a coding and documentation resource for providers and clinical staff.
Key responsibilities
- Review provider documentation in medical records and assign the most accurate diagnosis and procedure codes that meet payer coding and billing requirements
- Add missing codes to claims supported by provider chart documentation for submission of claims that reflect the severity and intensity of care rendered
- Query providers to obtain clarifying documentation to improve the specificity and completeness of data used to assign diagnosis and procedure codes
- Review denials and recode claims as appropriate for resubmission
- Complete chart auditing to improve coding accuracy as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in insurance and reimbursement
- Working knowledge of medical terminology preferred
- Working knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT codes required, with at least 1 year of experience
- Coding certification preferred, but must be able to obtain certification within 6 months of hire (or as assigned by management)
- Working knowledge of managed care, government payers, and private payers preferred
- Proficiency with computers, calculator, copier, and other standard office equipment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
- Reliable transportation to and from site if onsite
- Ability to be moved between sites as assigned
- Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus
