Reviews the complete medical record to assign diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-9-CM and CPT. Queries physicians when documentation is unclear and analyzes records for completeness.

Requirements & Qualifications
Education
- B.S. in Health Information Management or A.A.S. in Health Information Technology, or
- RHIA or RHIT certification
- CCS preferred
- RHIA/RHIT-eligible candidates enrolled in an HIT or HIM program may be considered if they have completed coursework in coding, medical terminology, and anatomy & physiology
- CPC or CMC credential, or eligibility to sit for certification through a comparable healthcare/HIM program, may also be considered
- Must obtain AHIMA or AAPC certification within 1 year of hire or graduation, whichever is later
- Must pass the CH coding test
- Must maintain credentials through continuing education requirements
Experience
- Six months of coding experience in an acute care facility preferred
Skills
- Strong knowledge of ICD-9-CM and CPT coding systems
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and prioritization skills
- Proficiency with computers, software, and related technology
- Ability to review CDI worksheets and query physicians when appropriate
- Ability to enter diagnoses, procedures, and patient data accurately throughout the day
