University of Iowa Health Care’s Professional Coding Division is seeking a Coding Representative to assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes for professional services, including outpatient encounters and inpatient hospital services.
This role is eligible for remote work, with training provided onsite or in a hybrid format. Remote eligibility is reviewed after successful training and must comply with university remote work policies.
The position supports Patient Financial Services and focuses on accurate coding, compliance, reimbursement integrity, and communication with physicians and other staff when additional documentation is needed.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and/or experience.
- Knowledge of professional/physician coding rules.
- Experience with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, NCCI edits, NCDs, LCDs, and outpatient coding guidelines.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Proficiency with standard office software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail, time management, and prioritization skills.
- Ability to handle complex and ambiguous situations with minimal supervision.
- RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CPC-A, or equivalent certification from a nationally recognized credentialing body is required.
- Preferred: at least 1 year of medical coding and/or billing experience.
- Preferred: experience with teaching-setting coding and billing requirements, HIPAA, CMS regulations, and Epic.
