Job Summary
The Inpatient Coder is responsible for accurately assigning diagnosis and procedure codes to inpatient discharges at smaller McLeod Health facilities representing less complex medical/surgical encounters.

Responsibilities
- Stay current on coding developments by attending coding classes, reading coding update articles, and attending seminars when available.
- Assign inpatient diagnosis and procedure codes accurately, including principal diagnosis, co-morbidities, complications, secondary diagnoses, present on admission indicators, discharge disposition, hospital-acquired conditions, principal procedure, and secondary procedures.
- Code Obstetrics, Newborn, and Behavioral Health encounters when assigned by a supervisor and/or director.
- Query physicians appropriately when documentation is unclear in the medical record.
- Work closely with Clinical Documentation Specialists to support optimal DRG assignment.
- Maintain department productivity standards with a 95% accuracy rate.
