Surgical Denial Specialist

University of Colorado Medicine (CU Medicine) is a large multi-specialty physician group practice providing business operations, revenue cycle, and administrative services to support more than 4,000 physicians and advanced practice providers across the University of Colorado School of Medicine and affiliated care settings.

The Surgical Coding Denial Specialist will join the AR Surgery team and be responsible for resolving insurance claim denials for assigned surgical specialty departments. This role focuses on creating effective written appeals, performing account investigation, and using coding, contract, medical record, and carrier review to support denial resolution and revenue recovery.

This position may be performed 100% remotely, and out-of-state candidates will be considered.

Key duties include:

  • Appealing denials through coding review, contract review, medical record review, and carrier interaction
  • Managing complicated denied claims with a high level of expertise
  • Identifying trends and patterns in denials to help prevent recurring issues
  • Communicating denial patterns and payer policy changes to management and team members
  • Prioritizing and processing high volumes of denials while maintaining quality
  • Serving as an escalation point for unresolved denial issues
  • Assisting with training new employees as assigned
  • Collaborating on special projects as needed
Requirements & Qualifications
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in medical practice billing with exposure to denials, appeals, insurance collections, and follow-up
  • CPC certification required
  • ICD-10 and CPT coding assessment skills required
  • Surgery experience highly preferred
  • Orthopedic and surgery experience highly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field strongly preferred
  • Intermediate PC software skills required
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong understanding of contract language and denial appeal logic
