This role is responsible for safeguarding the accuracy, compliance, and integrity of clinical and technical coding across the hospital. As a subject matter expert, the Senior Inpatient Coder will influence best practices, improve coding quality, and help build a high-performing coding team.
Key responsibilities include conducting coding audits, providing targeted education and coaching, managing work queues, developing performance metrics and coder report cards, and collaborating with CDI, denials, revenue cycle, and leadership to support accurate reimbursement, regulatory compliance, and reliable clinical data.
Required experience
- Five or more years of combined medical coding experience
- At least three years in technical coding
- Strong knowledge of DRGs, APCs, and APGs, including reimbursement impact
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong time management and organizational abilities
Preferred experience
- Experience conducting coding audits and audit response activities
- Experience providing coder education, coaching, or mentoring
- Ability to collaborate effectively with leadership and cross-functional partners
Education and certifications
- Associate's degree in Health Information Technology
- One AHIMA certification: RHIT or RHIA
Additional qualifications
- Experience with Epic is a plus
- Experience with 3M encoder is a plus
- Ability to perform sedentary work
