Medical Records Technician (Coder)

  • Reviews medical records for completeness, including required identifiers, signatures, dates, and supporting reports.
  • Evaluates documentation for accuracy, consistency, medical necessity, and appropriate modifier usage.
  • Reviews provider documentation to ensure correct Evaluation and Management (E/M) levels and CPT code assignment.
  • Assigns and sequences ICD, CPT, HCPCS, CDT, and DSM codes based on documented diagnoses and procedures.
  • Ensures diagnostic and procedural terminology aligns with current medical nomenclature and official coding guidelines.

A total compensation package is available through the Indian Health Service.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must pass E-Verify and a federal background investigation.
  • Must complete required background forms within five calendar days of issuance.
  • Financial suitability review required.
  • Must present two valid forms of identification prior to appointment; any state-issued ID or driver's license must be REAL ID-compliant.
  • GS-07 qualification: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06, performing coding and documentation review duties.
  • Experience should include verifying documentation, requesting clarification, assisting providers with coding guidelines, participating in coding reviews/audits, and analyzing denial patterns or documentation issues.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) preferred.
  • No education requirements.
