Medical Records Technician (Coder)

This role focuses on reviewing medical records, validating documentation, and assigning accurate codes for diagnoses and procedures. You will help maintain coding accuracy, support reimbursement integrity, and ensure documentation aligns with official coding guidelines.

Key duties

  • Review medical records for completeness, including required identifiers, signatures, dates, and supporting reports
  • Evaluate documentation for accuracy, consistency, medical necessity, and correct modifier usage
  • Review provider documentation to ensure appropriate E/M levels and CPT code assignment
  • Assign and sequence ICD, CPT, HCPCS, CDT, and DSM codes based on documented diagnoses and procedures
  • Ensure diagnostic and procedural terminology aligns with current medical nomenclature and official coding guidelines

A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Resume must clearly show sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the position
  • At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06 is required for GS-07 consideration
  • Experience should include verifying documentation supporting diagnoses, treatments, procedures, and services rendered
  • Experience obtaining clarification for missing or unclear documentation
  • Experience assisting providers and clinical staff with coding guidelines and documentation requirements
  • Experience participating in coding reviews, compliance audits, and performance improvement activities
  • Experience analyzing coding trends, denial patterns, and documentation issues
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) preferred

Conditions of employment

  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Must successfully pass E-Verify and a federal background investigation
  • Financial suitability review required
  • Must complete required background forms within 5 calendar days of issuance
  • May be subject to a probationary period
  • Must comply with IHS immunization policy if working in an IHS healthcare facility
