Codes medical information into Prisma Health billing and abstracting systems using established professional and regulatory coding guidelines. This role performs inpatient coding for multiple facilities, including major traumas and NICU records, assigns ICD and ICD-PCS codes, and supports DRG assignment. The position also reviews documentation for MCC/CCs, HAC/PSI, POA indicators, and quality indicators to ensure complete, accurate, timely, and consistent coding in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
Works under general supervision of HIM Coding leadership, reviews work queues, prioritizes charts within required timelines, follows up on on-hold accounts, and collaborates with clinical documentation specialists. The coder identifies and requests physician queries when documentation is unclear or ambiguous, trends coding issues, and escalates concerns as needed. Additional duties may be assigned.

- Certification Program, associate degree, or coding certificate through AHIMA or another approved coding certification program
- Three years of coding experience in an acute care or ambulatory setting
- Inpatient coding experience required
- RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CIC, or other approved coding credential required
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology
- Experience with electronic medical records and 3M or encoder systems preferred
- EPIC health information system experience preferred
- Ability to work independently and concentrate for extended periods of time
- Completion of the IP Coder Associate program may be considered in lieu of the stated education and experience requirements
