The Inpatient Coding Apprentice evaluates medical records and documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, CMS documentation requirements, and CPT guidelines. The role reviews complex inpatient records to identify diagnoses, CPT procedures, and PCS procedures; selects the principal diagnosis and principal procedure; ensures appropriate DRG assignment; abstracts relevant information; identifies documentation issues; and requests clarification from physicians when records are ambiguous or conflicting. The position also provides technical guidance and training on medical coding to physicians and staff.
The schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and the role is based at Singing River Healthcare Academy with travel throughout the SRHS service area as needed.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience
- Experience in medical terminology and anatomy/physiology preferred
Special requirements
- Must pass Medical Records Coding tests in CPT and ICD-10 with a score of at least 70%
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and DRGs/APCs required
- Must maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and ethical coding standards
- Must have strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure
- Must be proficient with computers and office software, including MS Outlook and Word
- Must complete de-escalation training within 90 days of orientation
