Health Information Technician

Empath Health

Empath Health is seeking a Health Information Technician to support the management, organization, privacy, and security of patient health information. This role is based on-site in Ocala, Florida and supports the Health Information Management (HIM) department across hospice, home health, and affiliated programs.

The position plays an important role in maintaining the accuracy and completeness of medical records, supporting quality reporting, and meeting regulatory requirements. The technician will process records in a timely manner, communicate with clinical staff about missing documentation, and help ensure HIPAA compliance and record integrity throughout the patient care process.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • College degree, AHIMA certification, or an associate degree preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year of related health information experience or credential preferred
  • 1–3 years of HIM experience preferred for candidates without certification or degree
  • Experience using electronic health record systems
  • Proficiency with Outlook and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Clear communication skills with patience and compassion
  • Flexibility to work weekdays and/or weekends if needed

Key Responsibilities

  • Process patient information accurately and on time for admissions, deaths, discharges, and transfers
  • Notify clinical staff and physicians about missing documentation for record completion
  • Audit medical records for accuracy and completeness throughout the patient stay
  • Ensure time-sensitive documents are processed the day they are received
  • Follow up on unsigned documents consistently
  • Collaborate with the HIM Supervisor on compliance, equipment, and supply needs
  • Maintain strict HIPAA compliance and protect patient confidentiality
