The Inpatient Coder III is responsible for accurately assigning ICD diagnostic and ICD procedural codes after thoroughly reviewing provider documentation. The role also abstracts demographic and clinical information from inpatient records for data collection, reimbursement, research, and compliance with state and federal regulations and other agencies using established coding principles and protocols.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Health Information Management, Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, or another science-based degree such as nursing preferred
- RHIT, RHIA, RN, CIC, CCS, or CPC certification required
- One year of experience as an inpatient coder at an acute care or academic teaching facility required, or successful completion of an inpatient coding apprenticeship program
- Demonstrated competency in all essential functions of an Inpatient Coder II role
- N/A for additional required or preferred skills
