Responsible for coding inpatient and outpatient medical records in accordance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and AHA coding guidelines. Codes are assigned to diagnostic and procedural statements documented in the patient medical record to support accurate MS-DRG assignment.
Key duties include:
- Reading and interpreting medical record documentation to identify diagnoses and procedures
- Using hospital encoder/grouper tools effectively
- Applying AHA Coding Guidelines and departmental reference sources
- Serving as a coding resource for other departments and providers
Requirements & Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited coding program (2-year or 4-year)
- 1 year of inpatient/outpatient coding experience in an acute care facility
- CPC, COC, CIC, CCA, CCS, RHIT, or RHIA credential required
- Knowledge of PC applications, including Windows and 3M Encoder
- Must pass a coding test with an acceptable score
