Responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedure codes to inpatient encounters based on electronic medical record documentation while maintaining compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.
The role supports coding quality, abstracting accuracy, physician query processes, and timely completion of coding work items to help maintain organizational revenue cycle performance.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education
- Associate’s degree or higher in a CAHIIM-accredited program, or two additional years of experience in lieu of degree
Experience
- One year of relevant inpatient coding experience, or successful completion of the Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program or Outpatient to Inpatient Coder Transition Program
Licenses and Certifications
- RHIT
- RHIA
- CCS
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of coding classification systems, DRG/APC systems, official coding guidelines, and coding compliance
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Proficiency with electronic encoder applications preferred
- Familiarity with electronic medical records, imaging systems, office software, coding software, and abstracting systems
- Strong communication skills and English proficiency
